3D Resin Printing 00 Model Trains #9
Finally fixed all the wheels and regained a little sanity
Chitubox Slicing Issues
After identifying the problem with… something, I was optimistic these would print. For once. Which they did. Awesome.
Brief recap; the problem seems to be with the Chitubox slicer. Other programs slice my model fine, but Chitubox doesn’t like the way I build models. The simplest fix is to look for oddities layer by layer, then try to figure out how to repair my model accordingly. Fixes are mostly performing boolean uniform operations and filling in holes where it makes no sense to fill in the hole because it’s not visible!
I fixed all the failing wheels, placed them on a single print layout, set the layer height to 0.2 mm and they came out perfect.
The detailing is hard to make out with the white resin, but I can’t justify wasting time and money priming the prints by brush. I don’t even have any paints or primers, let alone an airbrush.
Believe me, they look the same printed as they do in the renders (from post 6).
Design #10
This design would be great for industrial uses. Even the 3 tiny bolts printed fine. Not that you can see in the image.
Design #11
It’s not great. Maybe it could be scaled up and used for engines? Could be good for carriages?
Design #12
I’m very impressed that the intricate design printed flawlessly. The spokes are about 2 mm thick. It’s has a very bicycle feel. Not really liking this one.
Design #13
I took design 11 and put a load of holes in it like design 8. It’s a bit much. Maybe? Think I might like it more if the series of holes around the outer wheel were slightly smaller.
Design #14
Would look good on the nuclear weapon flat bed I’m designing. Other than that it doesn’t have much of a use.
Oh no, spoiler!
Summary
Happy to finally get all my wheel designs closed off. I have a better understanding of the printing limitations, level of details I can use on future prints and potential issues to look for when prints fail.
The best lesson being to always check the preview after it’s been sliced!
