3D Resin Printing 00 Model Trains #21
More Warhammer style trains. Now with less war.
I Don’t Know What I’m Doing
It’s hard to design Warhammer units when I know almost nothing about it. Doesn’t interest me enough to learn either. I don’t know what styles or logos to use. That’s why I left a lot of logos off these.
I don’t know if these are remotely accurate to anything, they seemed cool to me. This is also another opportunity to show how a single mesh, when properly constructed, can be repurposed to quickly create variations.
Model #01 - The Last War Machine
This is a heavily adapted chassis from the previous post. So different than I saved it until now.
The turret on top is interchangeable with those from the previous post. Scales and locking mechanisms are identical. I made 3 in total, left to right; cannon, quad cannon, missile launcher.
The quad cannon and missile launcher rotate vertically, the single cannon does not. Yes, the missile launcher is obnoxiously large. I like it.
Model #02 - A Mid Height Hopper
Is that a Warhammer design? I don’t now. There’s a Warhammer logo on the side. Maybe. I took it from an SVG I found which was labelled a Warhammer logo.
Being correctly made, it was simple to stretch it out with a dual axle bogie…
Then further stretched with a triple axle bogie…
Model #03 - Higher Height Hopper
I took model 2, raised it and added a lot more detail. Then waited a long time to import these variants for rendering.
My 2016 computer is showing it’s age with these ludicrously high poly models. High poly purely due to the spherical bolts. I wasn’t sure how detailed they should be for a smooth print, so over-smoothed them.
Again, it was simple to stretch out with a dual axle bogie…
Then further stretched out with a triple axle bogie…
Model #04 - Open Top Troop Transport
I took the hopper chassis, cut off the ends and added firing ports. Now it’s a troop platform.
This one is sparse because… Space Marines?… are real men. They’ll sit on the floor then stand when it’s time to fight. Try picturing it with soldiers onboard and maybe a few printed extras like ammo crates?
This needed detail on the inside because it doesn’t need smooth sides. The hoppers need to be smooth inside to easily remove contents and clean.
Also available in medium with a dual axle bogie…
Then the long version with a triple axle bogie…
Model #05 - Troop Transport With a Cannon
Take the troop transport, stick a housed area in the middle and put a turret on top. You end up with one of these.
I tried rounding off the skull logo, but I preferred it being flat.
The enclosed area has a door, ladder and vent on each side.
I haven’t finished designing any turrets yet, but the below is one of my works in progress to get an idea of the weapon scale I’m going for; massive. The turret length is the same size as a regular hopper.
Model #06 - Mini Length Troop Transport With a Cannon
I took design 5 and cut most of the end sections off, leaving a small area for troops to disembark from the central housing. The bogies were also swapped out for static axles. It’s a little longer than the standard hopper.
The problem with this design is that enormous cannon from deign 5 couldn’t go on this mesh. It would fit in the turret holes, however the barrels are so long they extend past the hook bar. There’s a good chance the turret would hit any other stock attached to the chassis.
I envision this unit having a shorter, but taller turret. Maybe anti-air? Or maybe a similar design to the large turret but just shorter and less powerful?
Model #07 - Mid Length Troop Transport With a Cannon
Combine model 5 with model 6 and you get model 7. Mango maths.
One side is an further shortened version of model 6, the other is extended like model 5. Creating a longer area for the larger cannon to rest when idle. This way we can have a massive cannon on a shorter chassis.
I pulled out 1 of the firing vertical points and reduced the length a little to create yet another variant. Though shorter, this is just long enough to support the large cannon from earlier. Assuming I don’t make the cannon barrels even longer in the final version!
Going Forward
There are more Warhammer style designs to make, but I have a fair amount of programming to do and some more real world designs I’d like to complete first. So don’t hold your breath.
Or do.
